Continuing Education Requirements

To remain registered, a doula’s continuing education must be verified as appropriately completed and relevant to the work of a doula each year. This means that the doula must:

  1. Engage in relevant on-going study,
  2. Document this study in her PERSONAL PROFILE of CONTINUING EDUCATION and
  3. Present the PROFILE for verification when asked to do so by the register. (The register will audit a sample number of doulas each year to ensure educational requirements continue to be met.)

Educational attainment is measured on a points (continuing education points or CEPs) system whereby the doula must gain a minimum of 10 continuing education points per year. Strategies for gaining these points are provided in the table below.

Reading a relevant journal article, writing a summation of the article and making this summation available for other doulas to read.

Conference attendance, writing an outline of interesting aspects and making this available for other doulas to read.

5 points per full day
2 points for a half day

Formal group discussion with peers that involves personal preparation, sharing of information, writing up new information and making this information available for other doulas to read.

2 points

Reading a relevant book and writing a useful outline for other doulas to read.

4 points

Investigating and writing up an issue of concern for yourself or a client and making this outline available for other doulas to read.

2 points

Engaging with a relevant video/ TV program/ audio tape, writing notes and making these notes available for other doulas to read.

1 point

Any other relevant education strategy
